Year
II Theology Resource
A 184 page book (6"x 9"),
the second volume of readings compiled by the Theology Committee of the Canadian Ecumenical Jubilee Initiative.
This book helps to capture the rich diversity of responses to Jubilee across Canada and around the world. Coming from different contexts in Canada, and internationally, and writing in different formats (longer scholarly articles and shorter sermons) the authors converge in their
(re)discovery of Jubilee. They help us to probe biblical texts and imagine their significance for particular biblical communities in specific historical contexts. They also help us to recognise this Spirit in movements and campaigns for social justice, eco-justice, and right relations
today. (Go here to see the book flyer.)

Holy Time: Seven Seasons of Jubilee
The Scriptures abound with expressions of God’s promises to
renew creation. The Sabbath day was set aside to rest in God and remember
God’s works of creation and redemption. Jesus’ parables of the Kingdom lift
our imaginations to the values that come alive when God’s salvation reaches
out and reconciles us with God, each other and creation. This is the Jubilee
vision: removing all that stands in the way of God’s peace, reconciliation
and justice.
The Jubilee is called the “Sabbath of Sabbaths” - a
special time to hear anew, be refreshed, and renewed in our commitments to God,
to each other and to creation. We are called to loose the chains of bondage and
injustice, to sound praise to the God who has saved us, and live as partners in
Christ’s healing ministry. For

Jubilee
as Justice Spirituality
Jubilee has
become a blueprint for repairing our world and restoring community. This
essay explores Jubilee as a justice spirituality– a ‘way of
being" in the world at this time of great suffering and desperate
hope. Drawing from the work of Lee Cormie, Maria Harris, Sylvia Keesmat,
Ched Myers and Rosemary Radford Ruether, Jennifer Henry addresses the
challenge of Jubilee to us personally and the challenge to our
communities to "live our lives in the best of struggles."
Jubilee! A Justice
Spirituality is compiled from a series of five
presentations prepared for a meeting of the Canadian Religious
Conference-Ontario in June 1999. Jennifer is Co-ordinator of Education
and Leadership Development for the Ecumenical Coalition for Economic
Justice. She is also a key organizer of the Canadian Ecumenical Jubilee
Initiative, where she is a member of the Steering Committee, Campaign
and Education Committees.

Engendering Jubilee: Biblical Hopes and Women's
Reality
What is the relevance of Jubilee for women? Drawing from
Canadian and Third World perspectives, this resource looks at the reality of
women’s lives and explores the gender dimensions of Jubilee themes of release
from bondage, redistribution of wealth, and renewal of the Earth. The resource
discusses a range of issues including: economic equity, debt and structural
adjustment, violence, sharing domestic labour, gender stereotypes, sexual
exploitation and the importance of Sabbath for women. Inspired by the vision of
Jubilee, Engendering Jubilee points out the need for balanced
gender relationships.
Geared to educators and activists, Engendering Jubilee
is an excellent "source" document for developing popular education
materials and includes a workshop outline.

1 Part Poverty
Reduction, 2 Parts SAPs: A Recipe for Disaster
Economic Justice Report Volume X/4 Dec 1999: The G-7 leaders'
response to the Jubilee Debt Campaign was disappointing both in terms of the
amount and their attempt to blend poverty reduction into Structural Adjustment
Programs (SAPs). This report exposes how the IMF and the World Bank are
blending poverty reduction into SAPs without changing their essential
neo-liberal character. A Recipe for Disaster
also examines the way structural adjustment has played out in Canada.
Recently released IMF documents reveal that fundamental changes to Canada's
social programs announced in the 1995 federal budget were first proposed by the
IMF in December 1994. Our own experience in Canada provides a powerful argument
for preventing the IMF from dictating social policies to any country. We
conclude that SAPs are fundamentally flawed and should be abolished as they
cannot be modified to serve poverty reduction goals. See
ECEJ's website for more details, including an on-line version.

Redistributing Wealth: A Jubilee Vision for a
Global Village
Economic Justice Report, Volume
X/3, October 1999: The wealth gap between rich and poor grows ever more
scandalous in our current age of globalization. How does the Jubilee vision of
sharing the earth’s abundance apply to today’s context of "free
market" globalization? This report looks at the political and economic
dimensions of redistributing wealth on a global scale. It examines how the
Jubilee teachings support a "human development" alternative,
especially for countries in the South, and calls for changes in global
governance to make transnational corporations accountable. See
ECEJ's website for more details, including an on-line version.

Jubilee Movement Shifts the Ground Under G7
Debt Plans
This Economic Justice
Report examines the proposals G7 leaders have announced for an official
"Cologne debt initiative" to bring debt relief for low-income
countries. The report describes Canada's plans for debt
relief for low-income countries and offers a detailed comparison of each
G7 member proposal. The report also demystifies the Highly Indebted Poor
Countries Initiative and proposes a "Human Development
Alternative" to the HIPC Initiative. The
report concludes with steps that need to be taken both before and after
the June G7 Summit in Cologne and provides a valuable list of further
resources in the bibliography. See
ECEJ's website for more details, including an on-line version.

Time
is Ripe to Expand Call for Jubilee
The Jubilee 2000 Campaign to Cancel Debt is having
enormous impact and provoking response from national governments, the IMF and the World
Bank. However, if we are to prevent debt crises from recurring, it will not be enough to
write off unpayable debts. This report proposes a set of reforms to break the cycle of
debt crises and global financial crashes, including setting up an International Insolvency
Tribunal.
Free market globalism is facing a growing crisis of legitimacy. The time is ripe for
the Jubilee Initiative to press for true reform of the global monetary system.

The
Land is My Blanket
Voices from Southern Africa on Land and Jubilee
This 8-page popular resource explores what the
Jubilee teachings about restoration of land mean to Southern Africans in their
context. Historically, many peoples were dispossessed of their land by
colonization and today privatization and commercialization, encouraged by World
Bank policies, limits access to land for many Southern Africans allowing that
dispossession to continue. Women are particularly affected as customary laws
that prohibit female land ownership and inheritance continue to be enforced.
The Land is My Blanket will illustrate the
importance of land to Southern African and especially how their voices reflect
on the "spirituality of land" - how they understand their
relationship to the land and how their identities are connected with it. It
also makes action links to the Aboriginal Rights Coalition proposals for
Canadian land claims campaign in the Jubilee Year 3 programme. (8 pages.)

Nicaragua:
Releasing a People from the Bondage of Debt and Structural Adjustment
This special 12-page issue of Alerta
looks at the effects of debt and structural adjustment programmes on Nicaragua
and explains how these exacerbated the damage done by Hurricane Mitch.
Nicaragua has one of the highest per capita debts in the world; because of
structural adjustment programmes, poverty has deepened dramatically and
ecological devastation has accelerated. This resource
brings forth the voices of Nicaraguans and their challenge to us
to look more deeply at the question of debt: Just who owes what to whom? As
well, regional Latin American debt issues are also introduced.
Go to the ICCHRLA Website to see a sample
article from the resource in the Commentary section of the Debt
and Human Rights page.

Peace,
What Peace? Confronting Central America's New Economic War
This 29 minute video tells the
moving stories if women, men, and children who labour on the sugar and coffee plantations
of Guatemala, in the sweatshops of El Salvador, and who have been left with no option but
to scavenge through the garbage or sell their bodies in Nicaragua. The video helps viewers
understand the economic policies which are now one of the greatest threats to human rights
in the region--policies supported by northern countries like Canada. The video is divided
into three, ten-minute sections making it an ideal tool to use in educational settings
around issues of debt, structural adjustment, and neo-liberal economics.
Price: $19.95 (individuals) or $29.95 (institutions).
