Every year, people travel to Las Vegas to participate in the World Series of Poker. It is an important gaming event but there have been some challenges, such as restrictions placed on online poker sites that used to enter their own players directly. Some of these poker sites may have offered entry as an online casino bonus. These limitations lowered the number of registrants for a few years. However, last year about 72,000 people participated, but that number looks like it will be broken by the time the tournament is completed.
The United States version of the World Series of Poker started in 1970; it now lasts for 6 weeks of different poker games. Over time, more variants of poker have been added with some of the popular games including:
- Texas hold ‘em
- Omaha hold ‘em
- Chinese poker
- Seven-card stud
- Five-card stud
There can be up to 45 different types of poker games being played each year. Each winner of each event receives a World Series of Poker bracelet and a cash prize which may vary from year to year. The Main Event is the $10,000 buy-in Texas Hold ‘Em where the winner can receive a multi-million dollar prize.
This year, the event has 400 poker tables set up which are all completely filled; this explains why the organizers feel that there will be more participants this year than last. A 10% increase in attendance is estimated; however, the exact attendance numbers won’t be revealed until the last day of the poker tournament after the last event.
